Yes, you really can find everything at IKEA… including breakfast.
Last week was my first time at the Columbus IKEA since it opened. I’ve been to many IKEAS before… Westchester, Ohio; Chicago; Canton, Michigan… but until now I haven’t had a reason to visit the Columbus location.
For anyone who isn’t familiar with IKEA, it’s an experience. Their bright blue-and-yellow stores are massive, and visiting them is essentially like walking through a living home furnishings catalog. As you stroll through, you’ll come up with all sorts of ideas for little storage bins and side tables and new shelves and spatulas and cool lamps that you never new you needed.
IKEA rightfully recognized how overwhelming their stores can be, so each store features an in-house play area for kiddos (called Småland), a giant cafeteria serving breakfast/lunch/dinner, plus a smaller food court near the exit with sandwiches, snacks, juices, sodas, and slushies.
We were making a casual trip to IKEA with my parents, mainly to browse for the fun of it (that’s a thing, right?), but of course I had breakfast on my radar. IKEA’s breakfast is just like their other meals, served cafeteria-style. You grab a tray, load up on pre-made items (pastries, bagels), order plated hot items, collect drinks (coffee, juice, cappuccinos), and pay at the exit.
The standard breakfast tray is a whopping $2 and includes scrambled eggs, chicken sausage, breakfast potatoes, Swedish pancakes (crepes!), and strawberry jam. There’s an extra side of heart-shaped waffles with jam and whipped cream for $1, and a special bagel with lox for $3. If you have an IKEA Family card, you get your coffee for free (if I read the sign correctly), so we fed four people for less than $13.
The restaurant features more seating that you can imagine, including little fours-tops near the windows, booths in a center section, and all around.
For a cafeteria-style breakfast is was well-executed and tasted great. And it’s certainly hard to beat the price.
You can get to the restaurant easily by taking the escalator or elevator inside the front doors, so no need to wander the entire store just to find the restaurant.
And, no, we did not have to assemble our own breakfast.
